Podcast 5.5: Crocketdile

We wanted to get a little holiday track out for everyone and here it is!

It’s a 80’s (or as Rob says a 90’s perspective on the 80’s) electro mash-up of Underworld’s new-ish single “Crocodile” with a remix of the wonderful “Crockett’s Theme”, from Jan Hammer. Crockett’s theme was originally written for an episode of Miami Vice. Check it out below:

Have a great holiday season and a happy new year everyone!

Download the track here if you are in the cool kids club with the password. Or it should show up in your podcast feed in iTunes.

Podcast 5: All Good Things

Is there some sort of guideline that says podcasts have to be released at a certain frequency? If there is, we certainly disregard it.

But you know what they say, good things come to those who continuously hit “Update Podcast” in iTunes… and here it is. The next set - “All Good Things”, with the title punctuated by the last track.

Personally, this has been a soundtrack to a hectic summer - with a good bit of the set in place since July, about 10 test versions have been on my iPod and floating back and forth between Rob and I as we went about with new jobs, travel, and life’s adventures. Technically, it was a sonic mess for a while - these tracks were not cooperative. But even so, I found myself queuing it up on the iPod just to enjoy. That provided the encouragement to find some time, buckle down, and work hard at getting it right.

Don’t let Justin scare you off in the first track - it’s really smooth remixed with Booka Shade. Enjoy it, we won’t tell your friends. And don’t claim you can’t resist getting down to the Rob Base / Jamiriquoi jam right after.

At this point if people are laughing at you, they’ll shut up when Feist pops on and go “who is that?”.. and you’ll tell them it’s that girl from the new iPod Nano commercials, but you were a fan before she was the new fad, when she was jamming out with Peaches in Toronto. Then fast forward to Track 6 and show your indie cred with Stars of Track & Field.

That about sums it up - new takes on guilty pleasures with some headphone-worthy new discoveries peppered in… all good things.

Podcast 4.5: Guilt, The Moment I Said It

Paul Hartnoll, half of the brotherly duo that was Orbital, will be releasing his new album, The Ideal Condition on May 28th. He’s been releasing singles for a little while - one of which is the very Kraftwerk-y “Patchwork Guilt”.

We thought the track was amazing, but needed some vocals. After combing through tons of material from people like Nina Persson, Feist, Thom Yorke, Amy Winehouse, and Calexico and producing some terrible attempts at a vocal track, along came a track by Imogen Heap that fit the tone and idea of the song. But boy was it a fight to get it in there.

What came out of all the work is a pretty sweet track made up of Hartnoll’s “Patchwork Guilt” and Imogen Heap’s “The Moment I Said It”.

If you’re in the cool kids club and can get the podcast, check it out by clicking here or in your iTunes feed. If not and you want to be a cool kid, let me know and we’ll see what we can do.

Check out Paul Hartnoll’s myspace page for samples of the new album.

Pain Will Tear Us Apart

The last track in Podcast 4 is made predominantly of a mash-up between The Police “King of Pain” and Nouvelle Vague’s cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” - all amazing songs on their own. If you loved the track in the mix, give these versions of the originals a try.

Podcast 4: Sweet Dreams of Ice Cream

Back from 100 BPM hip-hop land, we’re cueing up nothing less than 120 BPM in this set - and we promise there’s at least one song in here you’ve forgotten about that you’ll fall in love with again. Nothing like an acid remix of a remake of “Cruel Summer” to get that Ralph Macchio poster back on your wall… or Pat Morita if he was more your speed.

Technically, we haven’t had any Orbital in our podcasts yet - The Opus III remix in Podcast 1 doesn’t count. We rectify this situation by bringing back the amazing synth/vocal line from “Sad But New” off their 1995 Times Fly EP, mixing it with some Sian Evans (from Kosheen) vocals, adding a dash of Salt N’ Peppa, then dropping a 303 and some more Orbital beats on top of it. Done and Done.

Don’t blame us if you want to buy an Intel Centrino processor after Track 7. It’s not our fault they had some weird dancers bumpin’ around to New Young Pony Club in their commercials this winter. It _is_ our fault that we bumped their pitch up a bit and put them next to Annie Lennox - but we don’t feel bad at all about that one.

To close out, in honor of their reunion, we have a trippy mash-up of The Police’s “King of Pain” with Nouvelle Vague’s remake of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. A remix of a mash-up of a remake… the friend of the enemy of my friend is my… Ugh, so confusing. Where’s my chopsticks? I need to catch a fly.

Podcast 3: B-Side - Portishead & Alicia

This track didn’t make it into the podcast released a few weeks back. The only reason is that it’s technically R&B or Trip-Hop or whatever, and we wanted to keep the podcast strictly Hip-Hop.

Regardless, you’ll dig it.

Portishead’s “Revenge of the Number” (a remix of “Numb” off their Trip-Hop Reconstruction album) mashed with Alicia Keys’ “Karma”

Let’s call it “Revenge of the Karma”…

… or “Karma’s Revenge”…

… or “Karma Revenged my Number”

… or “Albert’s Belated Birthday Present”.

Take your pick. Just grab anything with some bass and have a listen.

You can grab it here, or through iTunes.

Podcast 3: Back Middle to the Front Don’t Front

Hip-Hop: Apply directly to the forehead.

We’ve got rhymes from Hamburg to Tokyo remixed with beats from even farther.  Sticking around the 100-105 bpm mark for most of the set, we then drift off into trip-hop dreamland with a five-song mashup to close it out.

Not good enough for you?  We have some seriously smooth blast from the past remixes, and a little freestyle from The Fresh Prince.

To download or subscribe to the set in iTunes, you’ll need to have the username/password.  Send an email to rich@systeme-d.org and pass the Kevin Bacon test.

If you’re part of our cool kids only club, you can grab the set here

or subscribe to the podcast in iTunes with the instructions in the mailing list announcement.

Finally, we’ll leave you with picture proof that you can request Biggie’s “Hypnotize” (track 4) for karaoke in Tokyo.

Podcast 1: B-Side

We’re currently working on the official third podcast. But here’s a small release to tide you over.

These are two tracks that didn’t make it on the first podcast. One is a mash-up of Crystal Method and Dabrye with some of our own beats, and the other is a remix of a Kylie Minogue song. They’re quite different tracks, and we thought the clash in the same set was a bit too much. However, they stand up pretty well alone and want to put them out there.

Download the mix here.

Or if you are subscribed in iTunes, you’ll get it automatically.

Remember, you need to be on the mailing list to get the username and password for the podcast.

6 Underground

Looking back at the past few months we’ve been around, the number of podcast downloads has been astounding. We want to thank everyone for having a listen - especially those who’ve written to comment on them.

The downloads have been so popular in fact, that to help with bandwidth issues, we’re going to have to restrict access a bit. We’ve always meant for this to be a small distribution to a select number of people - the podcast was to make things easier for those people to download our tracks. But it’s getting beyond a select group.

So here’s what we’re gonna do: password protect the tracks.

So how do I download the podcasts? The exact same ways as before - with the links in the posts, or this way in iTunes:

  • Go to Advanced->Subscribe to Podcast
  • Enter this url: http://systeme-d.org/wp-rss2.php

But for each method, you’ll need to enter a username and password.

What are the username and password? You’ll only get them if you’re on the mailing list!

How do I get on the mailing list?: Email rich@systeme-d.org and we’ll use a super secret process to approve you. Hint: It usually involves being some small Kevin Bacon number of people from one of us. But you get bonus points if you can guess the reference of the title of this post.

So downloading is just as easy when you’re on the list - and that’s what we want.

Stay tuned for a new original mini-podcast to test the new system.
